MASTER OF MATERIALS SCIENCE & NANOENGINEERING

Master's Program (MMSNE)

The Master of Materials Science and Nanoengineering (MMSNE) at Rice University is a non-thesis program designed for students who have shown academic excellence, as well as engineering professionals who wish to delve more deeply into engineering subject matter, increase opportunities for industry advancement and enhance their technical skills.

Students not only focus on increasing their engineering abilities but also round out their education with training in entrepreneurship, project management, networking and leadership, preparing them for industry and business with an advanced understanding of both the theories and applications of materials science and nanotechnology.

Areas of Expertise

  • Carbon, Nanostructured & Low-Dimensional Materials: Explore carbon nanotubes, graphene, and low-dimensional systems driving breakthroughs in energy, electronics, and environmental technologies.
  • Biomaterials & Materials for Human Health: Design materials for wound healing, regenerative medicine, drug delivery, and diagnostics with a focus on translational impact.
  • Electronic, Quantum & Functional Materials: Develop next-generation materials for microelectronics, sensing, and quantum technologies.
  • Energy, Climate & Sustainable Materials: Engineer solutions for carbon capture, energy storage, catalysis, and sustainability challenges.
  • AI-Driven & Computational Materials Design: Apply machine learning and data-driven methods to accelerate materials discovery and optimize performance.

Applications are now being accepted for Fall 2026 admissions. For additional details about the MMSNE program, including how to apply, connect with: Dr. Jae Lockhart or Dr. Ming Tang.
