Evgeni Penev, assistant research professor of materials science and nanoengineering at Rice, has been promoted to associate research professor, effective July 1.

Penev earned his M.S. in solid-state physics from the St. Clement of Ohrid University in Sofia, Bulgaria, in 1994, and his Ph.D. in 2002 from the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society, Germany, where he was awarded the Otto Hahn Medal for Outstanding Scientific Achievement.

Penev’s research focuses on the computational materials science of carbon-based systems and novel low-dimensional materials. His interests include semiconductor nanostructures, conventional and high-temperature superconductivity, and biological systems.
