The Department of Materials Science and Nanoengineering (MSNE) at Rice was ranked 29th among the nation’s top materials engineering programs in the 2021 U.S. News and World Report ranking of graduate schools.
MSNE has grown in national prominence in recent years. The department was established in 2014 when it separated after 52 years from mechanical engineering and became a discrete department. It has nine tenured/tenure track faculty members, four of whom were hired since 2014.
The annual assessment is based on evaluations by faculty at peer engineering schools.
