Yuan wins 2017-18 Vaughn Fellowship

Jiangtan Yuan, a fourth-year graduate student in materials science and nanoengineering at Rice University, has been awarded a Lodieska Stockbridge Vaughn Fellowship for 2017-18.

Yuan is a research assistant in the lab of Jun Lou, professor and associate chair of MSNE. His thesis is titled “Study of two-dimensional transition metal chalcogenides materials for renewable energy harvesting and generation, and low-energy consumption devices.”

Yuan earned a B.S. in physics from Shanxi University in Taiyuan, China, in 2010, and a master’s degree in materials science from the Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shenyang in 2013.

The fellowship, with a stipend of $16,750, is given annually to five Rice graduate students who demonstrate “outstanding achievement and promise.” One award goes to a student in social sciences, one in humanities and three in any discipline. Nominations are sent by the departments to the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies for review by the Graduate Council.
