MSNE Summer Research Opportunities for Undergraduates

The department offers two research opportunities for undergraduates.

MSNE Undergraduate Summer Research Program

The Materials Science and NanoEngineering (MSNE) department offers research experience for Rice University undergraduates. Each student will have a faculty mentor who will guide them through the summer research projects. Selected students will participate in an 8-week (40 hours per week) program with the choice to receive up to a $3,000 stipend or 3 research credit hours.

During the summer, students attend weekly group meetings with their respective research groups and faculty mentors and participate in research activities with the other graduate students and postdocs. Participants will have an opportunity to work closely with an MSNE faculty member in an area of interest (ex. nanotechnology, Electron Microscopy, Energy Conversion and Storage, Metallurgy, Surfaces, Interfaces, etc.). MSNE faculty and research descriptions are available here.

At summer's end, each student prepares a presentation explaining research project results to be presented in the research group meeting. Rice University Sophomore and Junior MSNE undergraduates in good academic standing are eligible to apply. Seniors graduating in May 2017 or earlier are not eligible.

Applications are due Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at 5 pm. The application process involves a short questionnaire accompanied with a CV, unofficial transcript and research abstract (if applicable). The program committee will meet to select winners.

The application form is available online here

Please contact Kim Hardy with any questions at kim.hardy@rice.edu .

Please Note: The $3,000 stipend does not include room and board and the 3 research credit hours will not count towards ones GPA.

MSNE International Summer Undergraduate Research Positions: Shandong University, China

Joint Center for Carbon Nanomaterials, Shandong University & Rice University (JCCN) was founded in January 2015. It is international collaborative center between the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Shandong University (SDU) and Department of Materials Science and NanoEngineering at Rice University. Based on this international platform, JCCN is offering two summer research opportunities to travel to China and work with Professor Lijie Ci at the JCCN.

JCCN mainly focuses on the design, preparation, characterization and application of the novel carbon nanomaterials. The following research topics are open to Rice University undergraduate students in the department of Materials Science and NanoEngineering for the summer 2017:
1. Graphene foam preparation and their water treatment applications.
2. CVD growth of carbon nanotubes sheets and their thermal applications.

The JCCN summer internships consist of a round-trip ticket of up to $1500 to china, local lodging, and a monthly stipend of RMB 4000/month to the selected students. In addition to the research experiences, the students will also have of opportunities for Chinese culture experiences. The duration will be 8-10 weeks depending on the actual start date, which should be before June 1st. Rice sophomore and junior MSNE undergraduates in good academic standing are eligible to apply. Seniors graduating in May 2017 or earlier are not eligible.
